Childhood memories part 4

October 3, 2012 § Leave a Comment

My mother liked to collect coins in jars. She used to use those coins for a New Year tradition we call “pawaras” where she would scatter coins all over the house and put more on entry points like windows and doors in the belief that it will attract prosperity and money growth. When I was a kid, I used to take some from these coin jars especially the 10 cents because they were the most and the hardest to notice. I would then use that money to buy the cherry bubble gum from this sari sari store next to our house. I remember the owner was an old man and he got angry every time I went there to buy because the coins were already obsolete!

Mama’s habit of collecting coins continued until the time we were all in university already. I still miss new years’ celebration back home.
